Whole red ginseng roots rather than a concentrate, sold by calibre. Twenty-ji is the coarsest grade in this range: about fourteen roots make up three hundred grams, so each root is thick.

The number is a calibre, not a quality mark — the quality scale is a different one. See the grading note below.

A number followed by ji is a calibre: how many roots make up a reference weight of three hundred grams. Twenty-ji is about fourteen roots, thirty-ji about nineteen and forty-ji about twenty-four, the surplus over the nominal number being a long-standing trade custom. Fewer roots to the weight means thicker roots.

Quality is a separate scale, and the two are often confused. Korean red ginseng is graded cheonsam (heaven, the top half per cent), jisam (earth, about two per cent) and yangsam (good, about fifteen per cent). A calibre says nothing about which of these a root is.
