A number followed by ji is a calibre: how many roots make up a reference weight of three hundred grams. Forty-ji is about twenty-four roots, thirty-ji about nineteen and twenty-ji about fourteen. More roots to the weight means slimmer roots, and usually a lower price.

Quality is a separate scale: cheonsam (heaven), jisam (earth) and yangsam (good). A calibre says nothing about which of these a root is.
