How to compare tea prices without confusing the pack size

Compare like with like: the same product, the same format and the same amount. The price on the front of a listing is only the beginning. A single pouch, a twin pack and an assortment are different purchases.

Write down what the price includes

Start with four details: exact product name, net quantity, number of packs and total price. For tea bags, add the number of bags and the weight per bag if stated. Keep delivery charges separate until you compare the total basket cost.

Do not assume a large box contains more tea than a small pouch. Some of its volume may be packaging, and an assortment may contain several different products.

Use a common unit

For loose leaf, price per 100 g is a useful starting point:

Price per 100 g = product price ÷ total grams × 100.

Here is a hypothetical example, not a listing from our shop. A 40 g pouch at €20 works out at €50 per 100 g. An 80 g pack at €36 works out at €45 per 100 g. The larger pack has a lower unit price, but it still requires a larger purchase and may be more tea than you want.

Price per bag is not automatically price per cup

A bag can be intended for a cup, a pot or a different volume of water. Compare the preparation instructions before using bag count as a serving count. For loose leaf, you need the manufacturer's portion size to estimate a cost per serving. If that amount is missing, a precise price per cup would be guesswork.

Do not assume a fixed number of repeat infusions when calculating value. If you enjoy another infusion, that is part of your own brewing experience, not a guaranteed extra serving in the pack.

Keep composition in the comparison

A plain tea powder and a sweetened drink mix should not be treated as interchangeable because both come in sticks. Read the ingredients and compare the product you actually want. The same principle applies to single teas and flavoured blends.

A quick comparison checklist

  • Same product and format?
  • Total weight across every included pack?
  • Bag count and intended preparation volume?
  • Any accessories or different teas in a set?
  • Total checkout cost for the same destination?
  • An amount you expect to use and store comfortably?
